Alan Hoffman: Photographic Works

In The Galleries – Alan Hoffman: Boys And Girls Welcome!

National Post, April 13, 2000, p. B7

For his first solo show, photographer Alan Hoffman presents architectural portraits of Vancouver area buildings — gas stations, motels — as well as oddities like Penticton’s Giant Peach. With their almost-painterly colour saturation and distorted scale, they seem like architectural maquettes, or structures in a model railroad landscape. It is this unsettling disruption of scale that gives these otherwise innocent images their vaguely sinister undertones. Removed from their mundane reality as forgettable buildings or uninspiring tourist destinations, they become the inhabitants of eerily nostalgic ghost towns. Boys and Girls Welcome! continues at Artspeak, 233 Carrall St., Vancouver until May 6th.
